A Peak into a Shanti Yoga Class
March 27, 2025Quelling Anxiety and Mental Distress by Engagement in Yoga
Life's most urgent question is how are we managing ourselves and each other? Across the globe, we've seen governments deprioritising the well-being of their people. Cuts to vital services such as education, healthcare, food assistance, housing, and social safety nets leave many vulnerable, reflecting a focus on power and profit over dignity and humanity.
It's natural to feel helpless when facing such systemic injustice, but those in power rely on this feeling. They want you to feel overwhelmed and believe your voices don't matter, but silence only allows injustice to grow. Your life can awaken others to the truth, and history shows that collective action can lead to extraordinary change.
While fracture is part of our current story, the question of what it means to be human is now intertwined with how we relate to each other. Supported by science and spiritual practices and grounded in civility and love, the potential for personal depth and communal life in this century can be found in the Yamas and Niyamas of Yoga. Engagement in yoga's spirituality correlates with better physical and mental health, and can quell rising anxiety and mental distress.
The world stands at a crossroads, where division, fear, and apathy threaten our shared humanity. However, there is hope in the emerging generation of compassionate leaders—and we see it in our young students who believe in justice, kindness, and the transformative power of human connection and understand compassion as a skill that can be taught, learned, and embodied, but they need your support. Even small acts of courage can create significant momentum because courage is contagious.
In your daily life, you can be an agent of change for skillful living by:
• Learning to recognise your own emotions and those of others to cultivate Emotional Intelligence.
• Developing deep listening and nonviolent communication skills to resolve conflict and build stronger communities.
• Strengthening your resilience and self-compassion to navigate adversity with grace and strength.
The classical practices of Yoga provide many simple ways to incorporate spirituality into everyday life.
You stand at a crossroads. Inaction will only deepen suffering and inequality, while action, though challenging, leads toward justice, dignity, and hope.
