The Vedic View of Life

Where Every Breath is a Prayer

Vedanta is the universal philosophy derived from the latter part of the Vedas, known as the Upanishads that goes beyond mythological and religious characters to bring the priceless wisdom hidden in these Indian ancient texts, that quenches the thirst for knowledge. It embodies a world view that ranges from questions about the Self and its sense perceptions to the external world and its conflicts.

The fundamental truth about oneself are conveyed in the great statements, the mahavakyas. These are: Tat twam asi (thou art That); Aham BrahmasmiPrajnanam Brahma and Ayam Atma Brahma ( the self and the universe are one). The goal of life is to know that the self (atman) is ultimately indistinguishable from Brahman. To the Upanishads, whoever becomes fully aware of the atman as one's core of self, realises identity with Brahman, and thereby achieves freedom, moksha.

Yoga Vasistha tells us: The Self dwells within you in a state of equilibrium, as pure witness consciousness, without form, and without the divisions of time and space. Live as the sages of self knowledge live. They know infinite consciousness and the world-appearance, hence they do not relish nor renounce activity in this world.
